Which pillow best suits my sleep position?

Do you sleep on your side, your back or your stomach? In this article we will tell you which pillow suits you best.

What is the right pillow for my sleep position?

There is no such thing as ‘the best pillow’. After all, it is a very personal choice. But your sleep position will largely determine the type of support you need. As a general rule, the vertebrae in your head and neck should always be in line with your spine as much as possible. Below you will discover what to look out for when choosing the right pillow for your sleep position.

The best pillow for side sleepers

Most people sleep on their side. Are you a side sleeper too? Then you need a pillow that supports your neck well, so that the neck muscles can relax. When lying on your side, it is important that the cavity between your neck and the mattress is sufficiently filled. That’s why we usually recommend a pillow with a reinforced neck roll. Side sleepers generally also sleep best on a higher pillow, so that the head and neck remain at approximately the same level as the spine.

The best pillow for back sleepers

When choosing a pillow, back sleepers should also make sure that their neck is well supported to prevent the spine from bending. If you lie on your back, your pillow must absorb the differences between the arching of the upper back, the neck and the back of your head.

When you sleep on your back, your body lies in a reasonably natural position. In that case, you pillow should provide minimal support. So choose a relatively low pillow, otherwise the neck will be overstretched and your breathing will be less natural.

The best pillow for stomach sleepers

In principle, sleeping on your stomach is the worst position, because sooner or later this can lead to back and/or neck problems. On your stomach, you often lie with your head to the side, so with a curved neck. We therefore recommend that you try not to sleep in this position, as it is puts pressure on the neck vertebrae.

Some people even sleep on their stomach without a pillow or with their head on the corner of their pillow. A pillow lifts your head, neck and shoulders, putting them in a better position in relation to the rest of the body. When sleeping on your stomach, this is actually not necessary. So if that is how you usually sleep, it is best to look for a pillow that is as low as possible
